SDG Indicator 14.4.1: A Collaborative Platform for Sustainable Fisheries SDG Indicator 14.4.1: A Collaborative Platform for Sustainable Fisheries

The SDG-Indicator14.4.1 VRE is a collaborative platform developed through the partnership between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto di scienza e tecnologie dell'informazione "Alessandro Faedo" (CNR-ISTI). This initiative supports FAO's Capacity Development Workshops on Stock Status Assessment and Estimation of SDG Indicator 14.4.1, led by Dr. Yimin YE and Dr. Anne-Elise NIEBLAS, and is part of FAO's broader effort to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The platform focuses on providing technical training and raising awareness on SDG Indicator 14.4.1: Percentage of biologically sustainable fish stocks.

Key Features and Objectives:

  • Focus on SDG 14.4.1: Directly supports the monitoring and assessment of the Percentage of biologically sustainable fish stocks, a key metric within the SDGs.
  • Capacity Development: Facilitates FAO Capacity Development Workshops, providing technical training on stock status assessment.
  • Data Integration and Analysis: Integrates diverse datasets and offers advanced analytical tools for a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing sustainable fishing practices.
  • Predictive Modeling: Enables the development and refinement of models to predict the impacts of fishing practices on marine ecosystems, crucial for evaluating management effectiveness.
  • Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: Fosters a collaborative environment for researchers from various institutions and disciplines to share data, methods, and expertise.
  • Open Science Practices: Promotes transparency and validation through open publication of research findings and data.
  • Evidence-Based Policy: Informs data managers and analysts, enabling the creation of policies that support sustainable fishing practices.
  • Training and Education: Serves as a valuable tool for training and capacity building, including integration into FAO e-learning courses.
  • Participatory Approach: Encourages dialogue and collaboration among scientists, policymakers, fishing communities, and other stakeholders.

Scientific Perspective

The SDG-Indicator14.4.1 VRE significantly advances marine science and fisheries research by integrating diverse datasets and providing advanced analytical tools. This allows for a comprehensive understanding of sustainable fishing practices and the development of predictive models to assess the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems. The collaborative nature of the platform fosters innovation and accelerates scientific discovery through the sharing of data, methods, and expertise. Open science practices further enhance the scientific value by ensuring transparency and facilitating the validation and replication of research.

Impact

The SDG-Indicator14.4.1 VRE contributes to achieving SDG Target 14.4.1 by providing a central platform for data collection, analysis, and reporting. This aids countries in tracking progress toward sustainable fisheries goals and meeting international reporting requirements, aligning with FAO’s emphasis on standardized data collection. The platform's insights inform evidence-based policy development, and its training and capacity-building activities equip professionals with essential knowledge and skills. By fostering a participatory approach, the VRE ensures that management strategies are more effective, equitable, and consider diverse perspectives.
